ABOUT ME
Dr. Serdar Altay, an Associate Professor at Istanbul Technical University’s Economics Department, boasts a robust 22-year career in international economics and political economy. Beginning as a Trade Specialist and negotiator at the Turkish Ministry of Economy (2000-2005), he advanced to pursue doctoral studies in GATT/WTO negotiations on services trade and investment, conducting research across Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. His professional journey then led him to manage trade programming at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Washington, DC (2008-2011), and to direct Sectorial and Strategic Analysis at Invest in Turkey. There, he spearheaded economic and policy analysis on investment trends and strategic industries, also advising the Turkish Prime Minister's Office on investment attraction strategies.
Dr. Altay’s scholarly pursuits center on areas like the EU-Turkey Customs Union and its modernization (Turkish Studies, 2022), the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (World Economy, 2018), and U.S.-Turkey Economic Relations (Center for Transatlantic Relations, JHU SAIS: 2017). His expertise spans international trade, foreign direct investment, development issues, transatlantic economic relations, and Turkey's political economy. At ITU, he imparts knowledge in International Trade and Finance, European Economics and Institutions, and Statistics.
Dr. Altay completed his B.Sc. in International Relations at Middle East Technical University and his M.A. in International Political Economy from Warwick University. He holds Ph.D. degrees in International Studies from Trento University and in Economics and Social Sciences from Kassel University, embodying a profound academic and professional command in his field.
