ERAY ALTINBÜKEN holds a PhD degree in composition from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Centre for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM) where he studied under Prof. Ilhan Usmanbas, Prof. Hasan Uçarsu and Prof. Kamran Ince. He is a member of the academic staff at ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory Composition Department and at ITU/MIAM. Altinbüken’s music could be described as a fusion of free-atonal harmonic elements and tonal and modal references with features pertaining to Western popular music, Turkish makam music and Turkish folk music within a contemporary Western art music framework. Having prepared his doctoral dissertation on musical hybridisation, the artist’s output is centered around the concept of interstylistic composition. His works have been performed in various places in Turkey and Germany, most notably in events such as the International Mediterranean Contemporary Music Festival, Istanbul International Spectral Music Conference and Antalya International Piano Festival. Altinbüken also has music written for movies, documentaries and cartoons, mostly broadcasted by Turkish Radio and Television TRT.
