ABOUT ME
Being a faculty member of Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Faculty of Computer and Informatics, Artificiai Intelligence and Data Engineering, Prof. Dr. Gülşen Cebiroğlu Eryiğit, is the founder and manager of Natural Language Processing Group, Turkey’s the first and most rooted team working on Turkish language in the field of Natural Language Processing (Google Scholar). She is the most cited academician for scientific publications in the field of natural language processing in Turkey. Natural Language Processing is a technology that needs to be developed locally for each language, which is why Eryiğit’s work is important in terms of closing a gap in Turkey. The Natural Language Processing software that Eryiğit produced has been licensed to a company abroad and become the first software export of ITU.
Academic Career
She received her secondary and high school education in French at Saint-Michel high school in Istanbul between 1988-1995. Apart from her mother tongue, Turkish, she knows three foreign languages, English, French, and German. She entered Marmara Computer Engineering Department as the 1253rd among 1 million 250 thousand students in the university exam she took in 1995 and completed this department as the 2nd in 2000. Eryiğit received her master’s and doctorate degrees from ITU Computer Engineering Department in 2002 and 2007. Eryiğit was a visitor researcher at Vaxjö University in Sweden in 2006 and took part in the studies with her group, which were selected 1st in the 2006 and 2007 multilingual commitment workshops CoNLL (natural language learning conference series).
She was awarded the Siemens Excellence Award for her doctoral studies in 2007. Eryiğit was the author and referee in many prestigious magazines and conferences. As of 2023, Eryiğit has around 6000 citations in Google Scholar. She is currently acting as an ACL RR Senior Action Editor. She is also acting as the coordinator of ITUNatural Language Processing Research Group, the director of ITU
TOMER (Turkish Teaching \& Application Center), the executive board member of
ITU Faculty of Computer \&
Informatics, and the vice leader at EU
UniDive Cost Action WG3
(Multilingual and Cross-Lingual Language Technology).
Projects
Eryiğit participated in European Union CLARIN (EU 7th Framework Programme, CLARIN - Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) as representative for Turkey. In addition, Eryiğit was coordinator and researcher for many projects including; EU (Cost), TÜBİTAK (1001 and 1003) and the project supported by T.C. the Ministry of Industry (Santez) and was consultant for 6 TÜBİTAK TEYDEB supported projects. At the same time, Eryiğit is a referee and observer in these funding institutions (EU H2020, Cost Action programs, TÜBİTAK, T.R.Ministry of Industry) for both research and industrial project proposals. Turkish Natural Language Processing Web Services (tools.nlp.itu.edu.tr) offered to national and international researchers serve over 200 researchers as of 2020.
