Dr. Monkul has been conducting active research for more than twenty-five years. He has worked as a researcher or principal investigator on various projects funded by the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), and the European Union (EU). His research and international journal publications span various aspects of soil mechanics, geoenvironmental engineering, and geotechnical earthquake engineering, including the engineering behavior of transitional soils, liquefaction of clean and silty/clayey sands and silts, experimental soil mechanics, lunar soil simulants and their stress-strain behavior, sustainable usage of dredged soils, alternative approaches to CPT-based liquefaction assessment, microplastic contamination in soils and its influence on engineering parameters, and fall cone behavior and undrained shear strength of silts. He holds a US patent titled "Automatic Funnel Control Device" for soil specimen preparation in laboratory testing (Patent No. US 11,953,470 B2). Dr. Monkul was a Marie Curie Fellow (2012–2016) and a Senior Fulbright Scholar at Oregon State University (2024–2025). He has also held part-time and courtesy faculty appointments at Yeditepe University and Oregon State University, respectively. He currently serves as a Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at Istanbul Technical University.
