One of the most challenging scientific problem is developing a novel, easy and cost effective water treatment method. Most of the treatment technologies are focused on high concentration contaminants, like reverse osmosis or capacitive deionization systems. However, contaminants with very dilute concentrations but have a big health and environmental impact there is a vital need for new and improved treatment methods. Electrochemical methods offer several advantages over other approaches, such as operation at ambient temperature and pressure, robust performance and capability, low energy input and low waste output. In this project, we want to develop an electrochemical method to absorb/destroy these compounds in water systems effectively. For this aim, two different pathways are followed. (i) A catalyst is synthesized for electroreduction purposes and used for reducing disinfection by-products i.e. chloroform, NDMA and bromate. (ii) An asymmetric electrochemical system (PVF-CNT//pPy) will be implemented to a flow cell to remove selectively vanadium removal from water streams.
